Obituary for Berdena Spencer (Mercer)

SPENCER, BERDENA

March 10, 1935 – December 22, 2022. It is with a mix of sadness and relief that we announce the death of our cherished mom and nannie, Berdena (Mercer) Spencer, who despite many health challenges, almost made it to her 88th birthday.

Berdena (Berde) was the last surviving member of her family. She was predeceased by her parents Albert and Mary Mercer as well her sisters, Pearl and Mary (Mame), and brother Vaughn. In the past year she lost her treasured son, Donald and devoted husband Wesley.

Left to mourn with sadness and precious memories are her daughters Renee (Richard) Porter and Kimberly Spencer; daughter-in-law, Jackie Spencer and grandchildren Emily Porter, Stephanie Spencer (Jeff Cook), Kaitlyn Porter and Ben Porter (Kelsey Chisholm), as well as her adored great-grandson, Weston Spencer, who always made his great granny smile when he visited. She also leaves sisters-in-law Hope Mercer, Ida (Guy) Decker and Florence Spencer, her life-long best friend Emily Dyckson as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Mom was a force to be reckoned with and there was no doubt about who was the ‘first boss’. She was a fiercely protective mother. We always joked that she was the only woman who had three perfect children…and she agreed! She had a great sense of humour and we will miss her infectious laugh. We are comforted thinking that she is happily reunited with Dad and Donnie, which is just where she’d want to be.

By request, there will be no visitation. A private family service will be held at a later date. Mom was a great lover of music and had a remarkable ability to remember the words of old songs. Listening to the radio provided her with many hours of entertainment in recent years. To honour mom’s memory, donations can be made to VOWR 800AM, which was her station. Messages of condolence can be left on the Memory Wall section of the obituary.

At rest with those she loved
