Obituary for Ken Cotter

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father, grandfather, husband, brother and uncle, Kenneth John Cotter on Monday, April 18, 2022 at home in Heart’s Content, NL.

He was born in New Perlican, NL on November 28, 1934. He was the son of the late William and Blanche (Palmer) Cotter.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Carrie (Parsons), eldest daughter Gale Marr, Joe Scott who was like a son, and his brothers James and Henry.

He is survived by his wife of 7 years Evelyn Smith, Heart’s Content, NL; children Ken (Darlene), Sherry, Jim (Dorothy Donovan), Sabrina (David Phillipo) Strong and Sheryl (Duane) Duhamel; sister Olive Snow; sisters-in-law, Betty Cotter and Rose Cotter; 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

He moved to Port Hawkesbury, NS from Corner Brook, NL in 1962 and opened a hardware store. He then started a printing business, Straight Printing & Publishing, on Granville St. In 1972, he moved his family to Glace Bay after purchasing Brodie Print Shop on MacLean St. In 1981, he achieved his dream of owning his own newspaper when he published The Coastal Courier. He went on to publish 2 more community newspapers, The Northside Tribune and the New Waterford Community Press.

Ken loved his family very much and never let them do without. He always thought of his employees as “part of the family” and went above and beyond to make sure they had what they needed, even if it meant he did without. He had such a huge heart, care and compassion for others and it showed. He and Carrie would take in kids that were experiencing troubles and gave them a safe place to stay, a warm meal, and love and support.

Celebration of Life Service will be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Heart’s Content on Sunday, April 24, 2022 at 3 p.m. Burial will be held at a later date in Glace Bay, NS.
