Obituary for Lloyd Russell

We are heartbroken to announce the sudden departure of our dad, Lloyd Russell, from this life, on Friday, April 14, 2023.

He is predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Maude (Mercer) Russell, brothers Mac (Barbara), Don, and Clarence (Marilyn), father-in-law, Harvey Vokey, and daughter-in-law, Sarah Turpin.

Leaving to mourn with cherished memories, his daughter, Jennifer (David Mugford), his son, Peter (Mandy Dawe), and our mother, Jeanette. He is also survived by his sisters, Joyce (Amos Clarke, deceased) and Hilda (Rupert Gushue, deceased); his brothers Calvin (Evelyn) and Lawrence; sister-in-law, Doris; special relatives Doug Ellsworth, George McAlpine and the Vokey family.

Dad loved his four grandchildren, Rowan, Ellis, Grant and Somerton, who will miss him and his hijinks. We joked that he was called Pop because he would pop in and pop out. He was close with his many nieces and nephews, who will remember Uncle Lloyd fondly. His extended family and a large circle of friends and associates will also miss him.

Lloyd will be remembered as a pipefitter and fiercely proud and loyal member of UA Local 740 for over 50 years. He made friends and connections in every province and territory across Canada and worked in most of them. He was among the first Newfoundlanders born in Canada, just three weeks after Newfoundland joined Confederation, and he took great pride in being a Newfoundlander. He enjoyed hosting people in his home, especially anyone from “away,” and performing the Screech-In ceremony. He had a passion for eating fish of any kind. His left-handedness was more than a matter of dexterity; for him, it was a personality trait, and he was genuinely delighted to meet fellow lefties. He was always willing to lend a helping (left) hand and had a great sense of humour. He loved to laugh and loved making us laugh. He had an astonishing ability to take a nap just about anywhere. He was a true character, one-of-a-kind.

The family will be receiving relatives and friends at Slade’s Funeral Home, L.T. Stick Drive, Bay Roberts on Wednesday 2-5 P.M. & 7-9 P.M. and Thursday: 10:30 A.M.-12 Noon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lloyd’s memory to the Community Food Sharing Association or your local food bank.

The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2023 at 2 P.M. from St. Matthew’s Anglican Church & Cemetery, 273 Water Street, Bay Roberts.

Like many that worked in construction, Lloyd collected stickers from different trades and union locals and placed them on his hard hat. As a sign of respect, we are asking fellow tradespeople, union members and professional association members to bring a sticker to place on Lloyd's casket.
