Obituary for Major L. Roy Nurse

Major L. Roy Nurse
April 28, 1935 - March 3, 2023

Roy was born in Pool’s Cove, a picturesque community on the south coast of Newfoundland.

He, along with his four brothers and one sister were blessed with a strong Christian heritage. His dad was a Merchant Mariner, often away to sea for months at a time. His mom, was the church organist and taught many young children how to play the organ.

Roy taught school for a few years (Grand Bruit and Boat Harbour) before moving to Toronto, Ontario.

In 1960. He was employed for many years with Robinson & Heath Custom Brokers. He met his wife, Mary-Alda in 1966 and they were married in the summer of 1967. In 1975 Roy entered The Salvation Army College for Officers, and was ordained in 1977, and appointed, along with his wife and 5 year old son, Eric to Ridgetown, Ontario. During their appointment to Saskatchewan, Michael Shane became their chosen son. They also served in Ontario, Manitoba, Quebec, Newfoundland and Alberta.

Roy & Mary-Alda served fifteen years as Corps Officers before transferring to the Addictions & Rehabilitation ministry where Roy served as Executive Director of Addiction & Social Services Centres until retirement in 1999. They resided in Calgary, Alberta until 2001 when they moved to Newfoundland. In 2002 they were called out of retirement, and served as Corps Officers of the Bay Roberts Corps for one year.

Roy and Mary-Alda have been actively involved in the Bay Roberts Corps since moving to this province.

Roy was a faithful member of the Men’s Fellowship (often found in the kitchen preparing vegetables for the corps dinners). He also enjoyed Men’s Bible studies each week, and was supportive of seniors’ ministries.

He had a wonderful smile, a delightful humorous streak, and a heart of compassion which endeared him to many.

He leaves to mourn his loving family:

Grandchildren: Brianna, D.J. (Makayla), Julia (Hunter), Austin (Julie), & Phoenix
