Obituary for Ruby Gosse (Jewer)

Today we have lost a truly remarkable lady and the matriarch of our Family.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ruby Gosse, formally of Spaniard’s Bay, in the late evening hours of December 5, 2022 at Carbonear General Hospital. She was in her 96th year.

Ruby is predeceased by her parents: William and Mary Jewer, and her five siblings; Pearl (Sam), Violet (Gordon), Ann (Fred & Clayton), Doris and Irene. She is also predeceased by her first husband: Stanley Barrett (1982), second husband: Lawrence Gosse (2001), daughter: Karen Noseworthy, RN (2018), son-in-law: Reg Hayes (1999) and step daughter: Christine Cakebread (2018).

Left to mourn are her children: Bonne Badcock (Vern), Keith (Dorcas) & Christine Hayes (Vince); step children: John (Terry), Judy Buttineau (Ted) & Carol Fitzgerald (Tom) and their children; son-in-laws: Blair Noseworthy and Ken Cakebread and her first cousin Alice Kelly.

Also, her grandchildren: Jason W., Paul, Shelley, Corey, Curtis, Reggie, Trudy, Kimberly, Jason H. and Jennifer; great grandchildren: Dakota, Chloe, Jayda, Alexis, Hailey, Ryker, Rory, Kaelyn, McKenna, Kyle, Aaron, Dylan, Austin, Victor, William, Mya, Hudson & Millie Ruby as well as nieces, nephews and friends in Newfoundland and Ontario.

Ruby’s #1 priority for her whole life was the love, caring and support of her children and family. She was also a loving and supportive wife to Stanley and then to Lawrence. She would always want to be up to date on how everybody were doing and what we were up to. Ruby was an avid reader and enjoyed her word puzzles. She was an excellent knitter (The more difficult the pattern, the better!) Another love of her life was music. She was an accomplished accordion player and could be easily convinced to play a tune. In fact, during her time in Ontario she played in a small band, The Pickering Perennials, which she enjoyed tremendously. She also enjoyed a game of 120’s and Scat, but she insisted that all rules be strictly followed.

Ruby enjoyed good health and maintained her own home until about 1 ½ years ago when the old age started to catch up with her. While we are heartbroken to lose her, we are thankful for her longevity and her love.

We want to thank her family doctor, Dr. Jason Efford for his care and home visits. Also the staff of Collingwood Downs and Dr. Howse, the Nurses and staff at Carbonear General Hospital. Special Thanks to her Homecare Worker Roz McLean.
